Thomas J. Donohue, a treasured friend, trusted confidant, and passionate partner left this good earth on October 14, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones.
Tom was a key member of the Society for Translational Oncology’s (STO) inaugural Mission Advisory Board. Indeed, he played a pivotal role in launching STO’s HARMONY initiative. His decades of expertise in global diplomacy and his international business acumen helped chart a strategic and steady course from the very beginning.
Tom served as president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce from 1997 to 2021, where he transformed the organization into a powerful force for good. An inspired and inspiring patriot, under his leadership, he secured major business victories, expanded trade, and safeguarded intellectual property, all while advocating for essential reforms that made our world not only more prosperous but also more equitable and just.
Tom’s extraordinary career earned him numerous accolades, including the Horatio Alger Award, the Boy Scouts of America Lifetime Achievement Award, and top civilian honors from many countries including Germany, South Korea, Belgium, and Japan.
He will be remembered for his tireless dedication to the business community, his visionary leadership, and his far-reaching impact on national and global policies. His legacy of service and commitment will continue to inspire us, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know and work with him.
For Ann and me, Tom’s impact was both seismic and soft — indeed, his presence was as welcomed as the whisper of a springtime breeze. If he wished, he could have easily filled the room with his presence and powerful persona, but he generously and graciously left ample space for others with whom he practiced his great gift of intense listening.
We will forever be grateful that he welcomed us into the exciting room of his life. Cancer patients the world over have been and will continue to be his beneficiaries.
Ann and I will hold hallow his precious memory in the lockets of our hearts.
Martin J. Murphy
Chairman of the Board
